$200,000 Wins in Elkton and Rockville

PowerballWhile yesterday’s $252 million Powerball jackpot went to a Missouri player, two Maryland players won large cash prizes last night.  Big Elk Liquors in Elkton and Belby Discount Beer & Wine in Rockville both sold $200,000 second-tier winning tickets for last night’s drawing.  Both tickets are yet to be claimed at Lottery Headquarters.

“Just yesterday we met our then-biggest Powerball winner, an Anne Arundel County man who claimed a $50,000 prize,” reported Lottery Communications Director Carole Everett.  “What a difference a day makes.”  Last night’s $200,000 wins are now the biggest Maryland has seen since the popular game arrived here earlier this year.  “We’re hoping to continue the pattern and get an even bigger Powerball winner soon, maybe even this weekend.”  Saturday’s jackpot is $20 million.

The Powerball drawing is held in Orlando, Florida and can be seen locally on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 pm on WBAL-TV, Channel 11.  The multi-state game is played in 41 states, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.

The lottery should have multiple winners for the powerball jackpot to give others a chance to win. I would like to know why is it that people in the very poor neighborhoods in baltimore city never have the big winning scratch-offs, it always are out there in rural neighborhoods but yet the inner city people are spending lots of money just to get a win (especially poor black neighborhoods) I really think it is a scam living off of the poor to make the rich richer.

Mary: There are sometimes multiple winners of one jackpot. There is no way to pre-determine how many people are going to win or where they will be from since it all depends on who selects the winning numbers. Also, please keep in mind that Powerball has a robust prize structure including the second tier prize of $200,000. You can view the prize structure here.

I would like to make a suggestion for the md lottery site. It would be nice to be able to key in the 3 or 4 digit # to see when the last time it has come out, I’ve been playing 1 particular 4 digit for well over 1yr and it has yet to come back out, is that possible?

Danielle: Thank you for the suggestion. We are planning many new and exciting things for the website and we’ll add this to the list of potential improvements. We appreciate you taking the time to send us your thoughts.
