Wins $50,000 Taxes-Paid Prize with Dream Green Scratch-off

Joshua Ross - Dream GreenThe relief on Joshua Ross’ face was impossible to miss as he sat down last week with Lottery officials to talk about his $50,000 win.  He’s been though some tough times recently, with money extremely tight and work as a handyman barely keeping him above water.  In two day’s time, however, all that changed.

“My girlfriend and I did some grocery shopping and had a few bucks left over,” he told officials.  “Driving home I saw a store I knew sold Lottery and decided to stop.”  Joshua was feeling pretty good because he’d been offered a new job the previous day.  “I wanted to see if the luck would continue,” said Joshua.  Among the several games he picked-out was the Dream Green scratch-off.

The couple took the tickets home and Joshua played them as they prepared dinner.  “The first part I scratched told me I’d won $50,000. I couldn’t believe my eyes.  I passed the ticket to my girlfriend thinking what I was seeing wasn’t real.”  A return trip to the store, Lucky’s Superette at 1101 Odenton Rd. in Odenton, confirmed the win and it was only then that he realized that Dream Green was a taxes-paid game.

The Glen Burnie couple loves Miami, having vacationed there several years earlier.  With the big win, a new trip is already in the works.

I love Miami too, Hope you guy’s enjoy it. Drink a Mojito for me. You two deserve it!

  • DuderDude

Funny, how ALL these “winners” continue to be from Baltimore/Southern Maryland. If areas NORTH of Baltimore have NO chance, just tell us! C’mon,Md Lottery, other people would like to win money, too!

    • mdlottery

DuderDude: The geographic locations of our winners are random. There is no way to predict where the winners will be. However, research tells us that more winners come from areas of the State in which more people are playing. Please take at our winners stories. There you’ll see that we have winners from all over the State.

      • Shiela

The Md. Lottery have been saying that it is random and not geagraphical for a long time and I am still not buying it.I have been patronizing the Parkville convience store for several years and there are never any big game winners or big scratch off winners. North East Baltimore does’nt stand a chance.

  • Sandra

What do you mean a taxes-paid game? Did he owe taxes or something?

    • mdlottery

Sandra: From time to time we launch a scratch-off game that includes Taxes Paid. With Taxes Paid games such as Dream Green, the Lottery will pay the required estimated State and federal tax withholding’s applicable to U.S. residents on the top prize at the required withholding rate. For more details check out the information provided on the back of a taxes paid scratch-off such as Dream Green.

      • George B. Aman

Regarding the “Taxes Paid” games I thought the IRS (Fed & ST) simply considered the “taxes” the lottery pays as “additional income” to the winner, resulting in the winner having to pay taxes on both amounts. Of course I understand the winner still nets more money overall!

        • mdlottery

George: That is correct. More details can be found on the back of the scratch-off.
