Judy: Numbers always have to match exactly to win.

I’m trying to figure out something on the mega millions scratch off. I read one question where the person said that none of his numbers matched on the mega scratch off, but he saw the letters at the bottom and collected $10, but I don’t see any mention of that being true when you read the info about how to play this game, can someone please help.

    • Maryland Lottery

Shay: There are no hidden codes or letters at the bottom that reveal prizes. The game play is simply, “Match any of YOUR NUMBERS to any 1 or more of the 5 WINNING NUMBERS to win the prize shown for that NUMBER. Match any of YOUR NUMBERS to the MEGA NUMBER, win $25 automatically.”

The Megamillions and Powerball scratch offs that I bought yesterday show the PROBABILITY at 1:2.10. Probability and odds are different; I bought 6 of them, none were money winners but 2 won the free MegaMillions ticket.

    • Maryland Lottery

Cheryl: On average the estimated probability of winning either a cash prize or a free quick pick ticket is 1 in 2.10″. This means that on average across the entire print and should not expect a winner or a free online play to happen every two tickets. I some cases there could be 4 or 5 tickets in the row that might winner or be non winner but the average is 1 in every 2.10.

If the odds of winning ar 1 in 1.437, why are there not winning tickets for every 5 to 6 scratch offs?

    • Maryland Lottery

rascal: Winning tickets are distributed randomly throughout an entire game. If the average chance of winning a prize is 1:5, this does not mean there is an automatic winner within every five consecutive tickets. There is no pattern as to where winning tickets will occur. Just as the possibility of purchasing a winning ticket exists, it is also possible to buy multiple tickets back-to-back without receiving a winner at all. Like all Lottery games, scratch-off results are purely the luck of the draw and are simply a matter of random chance. In addition, the odds on the back of the ticket are the ‘overall odds,’ which is best described as the ratio of winning tickets to non-winning tickets from all tickets printed for the game.
