Impacts popular Power Play option

Great news, Powerball players! Changes are coming to the Power Play add-on to Powerball that will increase winning ticket prizes by a random multiplier rather than a fixed amount.

Effective with the drawing on Wednesday, Jan. 22, Power Play will return to a random multiplier of 2X, 3X, 4X and 5X for all prize levels below the jackpot and second-tier prize. The prize for matching five numbers will remain at $2 million. All drawings leading up to Jan. 22 will award prizes to winning tickets with Power Play tied to fixed increased amounts.

And, there’s more good news! Players will pay the same price of $1 to add Power Play to the $2 Powerball ticket.

Powerball came to Maryland in 2010. Watch drawings at 11:22 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays on WBAL-TV 11. The drawing and winning numbers are posted at, available on your phone by downloading the Lottery’s new free mobile app and at retailers. The game is sold in 45 states and jurisdictions.

Marylanders won two Powerball jackpots in 2011. In 2013, nine players have won Powerball’s $1 million second-tier prize.
