Scores Third-Tier $10,000 Powerball Prize

Ali Akbas - PowerballA happy, but laid-back couple entered Lottery Headquarters today to claim a major Powerball prize. Ali Akbas plays Mega Millions and Powerball faithfully every week. This past week was no exception, but the outcome was very different. He and his wife, Aynur, matched four white balls and the Powerball to win $10,000 in the multi-state jackpot game.

The mechanic/electrician said he waits until both Mega Millions and Powerball are drawn before he checks his tickets. So, last night he pulled out all of his tickets from Friday and Saturday nights’ drawings and began the process of checking them. When he saw he had a winning ticket, it took awhile for it to sink in. “I think I checked those tickets about ten times,” said Ali. “I wanted to make sure I wasn’t mixing up the two games.”  He then shared the news with his wife who remained skeptical about the win until the prize was actually claimed.

The happy twosome, who has a 9-year-old daughter, plans to use the winnings to pay bills. The winning ticket was purchased at Giant, located at 9200 Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City.

It seems as though all winners are from areas near Baltimore–why?

LaVada: The geographic locations of our winners are random. There is no way to predict where the winners will be. However, research tells us that more winners come from areas of the State in which more people are playing. Please take a look at our winners stories from 2009 and 2010. There you’ll see that we have winners from all over the State.
