Capital Heights Man Wins Top Prize on Gimme Five Scratch-off Ticket
A Capital Heights man was taking care of a few errands yesterday when he stopped to purchase his daily Pick 3 and Pick 4 tickets. He was handed $5 in change from his purchase and, on a whim, decided to buy a Maryland Lottery scratch-off. That decision resulted in him walking out of the store $50,000 richer.
The lucky winner, who chose to remain anonymous, said that he felt a sudden and nagging feeling to purchase a scratch-off before leaving the store. “I never play scratch-offs,” he said, “So I asked the store clerk to pick a $5 ticket for me.” As soon he sat down in his car, he started scratching and saw that he won something. “I didn’t look at the prize for a minute,” he said, “I just figured that it was $5 or $10 – something to put a few extra dollars in my pocket.” When he casually scratched the foil off of his prize amount, he said that he felt faint for a minute. He immediately called his wife, who didn’t believe him, and then raced home to show her their good fortune.
The father-of-two, who works as a tow truck driver, says that he is planning on using some of the money to give his wife a memorable three-year anniversary celebration. He will also do something nice for his mom and then put the rest of his winnings in the bank. The winning ticket was purchased at Best One Convenience Store at 4523 Silver Hill Road in Suitland.
