Powerball FAQ's

What is Powerball®?
Powerball is a game where five white balls from 1 to 59 and one red Powerball from 1 to 39 will be drawn. You have a chance to play for some of the biggest cash prizes in America.  The jackpot starts at $20 million. You win a prize by matching some or all of the numbers drawn. If no one picks all the winning numbers, the top prize continues to grow! Ticket sales end approximately one hour before drawing time.

How to Play Powerball®?
  • Each playslip has five play areas (panels). You can play up to five Powerball plays (panels) on each playslip. Each play  costs $1.  You can only win once per panel.

  • A play consists of two fields. Select and mark five (5) numbers from 1 to 59 in the upper field and select and mark one (1) number from 1 to 39 in the lower field. If you select too many or too few numbers, your playslip will be rejected. The use of mechanical, electronic, computer generated or any other non-manual method of making playslips is prohibited.

  • Make a heavy vertical mark through each number you choose. Use only pencil or blue or black ink. Red ink will not be accepted. If you make a mistake, mark the “VOID” box for that panel, then use any remaining open panels to complete your selections. Please do not attempt to erase errors.

  • If you want the terminal to randomly Quick Pick your numbers, mark the “QP” box for White Balls and/or the “QP” box for the Powerball for each panel you want to play.

  • Mark the Power Play® box to add the Power Play multiplier option; that option adds $1.00 to each play, which doubles the amount you owe for your Ticket.

  • Powerball drawings are held twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday nights. You can play the same numbers for 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 or 15 drawings in a row, including the next drawing, by marking the appropriate “NUMBER OF DRAWS” box. Multiply the number of drawings by the number of panels played to determine your cost. If you are a winner before the final day on your ticket, you can still cash your ticket immediately. You will receive an exchange ticket for the remaining days of play.

  • Before you give your playslip to a Maryland Lottery retailer for processing, be sure to verify that the numbers selected on your playslip are the numbers you want to play. It is your responsibility to make sure your playslip represents the numbers you wish to  play and the drawing(s) you want to enter. POWERBALL TICKETS CANNOT BE CANCELLED OR VOIDED AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN PROCESSED. Tickets are only valid for the drawing date(s) shown.

*In some cases, fixed prizes and Power Play prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis and will be lower than these published
prize levels. Refer to the Powerball Group Rules for a detailed explanation.

**The Jackpot prize will be divided equally among multiple winners. When a prize is claimed, Jackpot winners will have the option
to receive their Jackpot prize in a single “cash” payment or in annuity payments. A Jackpot prize will be paid as an annuity
of 30 graduated payments over 29 years, unless the winner selects the “cash” payment method within 60 days of the Ticket
validation date, even though the winner has 182 days after the drawing to claim the Jackpot prize. The “cash” payment amount
will be lower than the announced Jackpot prize. Variations in the announced Jackpot prize may occur. Prize payments may
be rounded down to the nearest $1,000.

When there is no Jackpot winner, all of the Jackpot prize money is rolled over and added to the Jackpot for the next Powerball
drawing except in Match 5 Bonus instances. Following a drawing with a Jackpot winner, the Jackpot will start at $20,000,000.

Power Play
®
is a special feature of Powerball that allows winners to multiply the original Powerball prize by the Power Play
number. The multiplier does not apply to the Jackpot Prize or to the Match 5 Bonus prize. Power Play® multiplier numbers
are: 2, 3, 4 and 5. Below is an example based on a $1 per game wager:

Power Play Number Drawn: 4
Powerball Winning Amount: $3
Total Winning Amount: $12

As a special bonus
, if you play the Power Play and you win the second tier ($200,000*) prize, then your Powerball winning
amount will be multiplied by 5 no matter what Power Play number is drawn.

Match 5 Bonus Prize

When the Jackpot reaches a new qualifying record high level, no more than $25 million (annuitized) will be added to the
Jackpot each drawing. Any Jackpot prize money collected over each maximum $25 million (annuitized) Jackpot increase will
accumulate in a Match 5 Bonus Prize pool until there is a Jackpot winner. When there is a Jackpot winner, the Match 5 Bonus
Prize pool will be divided equally among the second tier ($200,000*) prize winners in that drawing. In the unlikely event no
second tier prize winners exist for that drawing, the Match 5 Bonus Prize pool will be paid to the third tier ($10,000*) prize winners.

The Match 5 Bonus Prize cannot be multiplied with Power Play.
