Jacob Sills - Mega MillionsJacob Sills, from Joppa, almost threw away his winning $250,000 second-tier Mega Millions ticket. The construction worker, who purchased the ticket for the December 12th drawing, said that it was only after his good friend Brian and his cousin Clarence checked the ticket that he realized he had won.

“I probably would have thrown the ticket away if they hadn’t checked it,” he said. “I didn’t believe them so we went and got a printout from the store.”

The 32-year-old told Lottery officials that he decided to wait until the new year to redeem his winning ticket for tax purposes.

The lucky winner said that it was only fair that he share the wealth with his friend and cousin. “After all, if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here.” Besides helping his friends, he plans to pay a few bills and take a few fishing trips. The winning ticket was purchased at the Royal Farm on Old Philadelphia Road in Edgewood.
