Slots Program Contributes More Than $94 Million to Education Trust Fund

The Maryland Lottery has broken its sales record yet again. And, to top it off, the Lottery transferred a record amount of revenue to the State of Maryland. The agency generated $1.795 billion in sales in Fiscal Year 2012. It also contributed $556 million to the state’s general fund to support important initiatives, such as education, public safety, public health and environmental programs. This is an increase of $36.6 million, or 7 percent, from last fiscal year and the largest contribution in the agency’s history. This revenue total makes the Maryland Lottery the state’s fourth largest source of income after sales, income and corporate taxes. Fiscal year-end highlights include:

  • Sales of $1.795 billion, an increase of $80.4 million, or 4.7 percent, from last fiscal year
  • Revenue of $556 million, $36.6 million or 7 percent more than last fiscal year and the highest-ever return in the Maryland Lottery’s history
  • Commissions earned by Lottery retailers totaled $118.3 million
  • Prizes paid to players reached more than $1.066 billion
  • Operational expenses remained low at 3 percent of overall sales

“Yet again, the tireless contributions of Lottery staff and more than 4,200 retailers throughout Maryland have contributed to a record-breaking effort,” said Stephen Martino, Maryland Lottery Director. “While 15 consecutive years of sales growth is quite an achievement, we are most pleased that the Lottery generated a record $556 million to support the good causes of Maryland. Every dollar generated by the Lottery is a dollar less that has to come from general tax revenues, and we are happy to have done our part this year.”

The cumulative fiscal year gross gaming revenue for Maryland’s operating casinos — Hollywood Casino Perryville, the Casino at Ocean Downs and Maryland Live Casino — totaled $194.5 million with $94.3 million, or 48.5 percent, going to benefit the state’s Education Trust Fund. That figure is up from $49.98 million — more than double last year’s fund contribution.
