Wins $55,555on new Maryland Lottery instant ticket

Funky 5sA Washington, D.C. music salesman is humming a happy song after making a Maryland Lottery scratch-off purchase of note.

The lifelong Lottery player is the first in Maryland to claim one of six top-tier $55,555 prizes on the $5 Funky 5s scratch-off. The new instant ticket launched in area stores on Aug. 21. The 53-year-old selected the scratch-off simply because it was new. A loyal player, he regularly tries his luck at Pick 3, Pick 4 and scratch-offs.

Our happy winner scratched the ticket in the store and, at first, thought he had won $50 or $100. “Then, I saw $5,000. I scratched again. I said, ‘Oh my goodness, I can’t believe this is real,’ ” the man said.

He plans to use the biggest win of his life to pay bills, especially medical bills. The music salesman is currently recovering from a motorcycle accident. He still can’t drive and his wife drove him to Lottery headquarters to collect his winnings. “This is a blessing,” the lucky man said of his win.

He found his winning Funky 5s ticket at Eastover Liquors at 4909 Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill.
