Powerball Jackpot Jumps to $425 MillionTuesday, August 6th, 2013
Next Drawing Wednesday, Aug. 7
The Powerball jackpot hit $425 million for Wednesday night’s drawing, following a surge in nationwide sales this week. The cash option also increased to $244.7 million.
The jackpot rolled over on Saturday to $400 million after no one hit the lucky numbers. This $425 million jackpot remains the third largest Powerball jackpot to date and the fourth largest overall jackpot in history. Powerball luck visited Maryland seven times this year, bringing second-tier $1 million Powerball jackpot wins to ticket holders in Baltimore, Dundalk, Mechanicsville, Middletown, Taneytown and Westminster.
The largest multistate jackpot in U.S. history was the Mega Millions $656 million jackpot in March 2012, which produced three winning tickets. Three Maryland public school employees, who took home a $218.6 million portion of the record-breaking prize, claimed one of the winning tickets.
On May 18, the Powerball jackpot set its own record of $590.5 million with one winner in Florida. Along with becoming the largest Powerball jackpot ever, that jackpot was the second largest in U.S. history. The second largest Powerball jackpot was $587.5 million on Nov. 28, 2012.
Players can watch Powerball drawings on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV, Channel 11. Winning numbers are available on the Maryland Lottery website at mdlottery.com, by text message (follow directions on the website under “Winning Numbers” to sign up) and on the Lottery’s winning numbers phone line at 410-230-8830. The multistate game is sold in 45 states and jurisdictions.
