Powerball jackpot raised to RECORD-BREAKING $550 million

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

UPDATE 11/28/11 at Noon: Lottery representatives just announced that the Powerball jackpot has been raised to $550 million with a $360.2 million cash option. Stay tuned for details!

The pot has gotten even sweeter for Lottery players – the Powerball jackpot was raised to $500 million with a $327 million cash option. This jackpot has rolled 14 times since early October.

Since Powerball began in Maryland, there have been two in-state jackpot winners.  On Christmas Eve 2011, a Pennsylvania couple purchased a $128.8 million winning ticket from Wesley’s in Elkton.  Just prior to that, in September of the same year, an Abingdon couple took home a $108.8 winning ticket purchased at Wine World in Abingdon. The largest-ever Powerball jackpot, $365 million, was claimed by eight ConAgra Foods co-workers on February 13, 2006 in Nebraska.

The most recent multi-state jackpot win in Maryland took place last March, when the Mega Millions jackpot reached a world-record $656 million.  The three winning tickets were purchased in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas.  The Maryland ticket, worth $218.6 million, was claimed by three Maryland public education employees.

Powerball drawings can be seen on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV, Channel 11.  The drawings are rebroadcast on Maryland Public Television.  The multi-state game is sold in 44 states and jurisdictions.
