Climbs to $214 million with $143 million cash option for Saturday’s drawing

Lottery officials will tell you that it used to be the $100 million mark that a jackpot needed to reach to start the “buzz,” to become a topic of conversation around the water cooler. It seems, though, that several super-sized jackpots won around the country in recent years – including here in Maryland – have altered that. The new threshold, they say, is $200 million. If that’s the case, get ready to hear the Powerball buzz.

With no top-tier winner in this past Wednesday’s drawing, the Powerball jackpot for Saturday has risen to $214 million, with a cash option of $143 million. According to the Lottery’s Director of Communications Carole Everett, now that it has passed $200 million, nationwide sales will likely drive the jackpot even higher even faster. “Every time there is no top-tier winner, expect it to jump more and more.” This Powerball jackpot has been rolling since early October.

Powerball drawings can be seen on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 11:22 p.m. on WBAL-TV, Channel 11. The drawings are later rebroadcast on Maryland Public Television.
