Silver Spring Man Wins $50,000 Playing Bonus Match 5Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
A Silver Spring man came to Lottery Headquarters on Tuesday to claim the $50,000 prize he won playing the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5. The lucky man, who plays the Lottery several times a week, bought his winning ticket on Saturday just to pass time. “I checked my numbers and freaked out,” he said. “I was so surprised.”
The 51-year-old says his good luck is genetic. The winner’s family members have had several significant wins over the years, including a recent $1,000 scratch-off win by his nephew. “Our whole family plays,” the winner’s nephew told Lottery officials. “I was the one who got him started.”
The lucky winner, a former chef, has been out of work for almost a year. He plans to use his winnings to catch up on his mortgage payments and credit card bills.
The winning ticket was purchased at the Safeway, located at 7648 Arundel Mills Blvd. in Hanover.
