$100,000 Lottery Winner Shifts Focus to Family

Lucky Emerald Riches scratch-off delivers top prize win

Emerald RichesKeeping a $100,000 Maryland Lottery win all in the family is the new focus of a Fort Washington man, who found himself holding a top-prize winning Emerald Riches scratch-off.

His big win on the new $10 ticket, which just launched on Aug. 21, occurred because of a true spur-of-the-moment decision.

“I really enjoy playing Racetrax,” explained the 22-year-old restaurant employee. “That’s where I usually spend the money I intend to use for Lottery tickets.”

Last week, however, when stopping by New Carrollton Liquors in Hyattsville to play his favorite game, the Prince George’s County resident noticed a Lottery vending machine. “I play scratch tickets maybe once a week and when I saw the machine, it just felt like the right time,” he said.

Unsure of whether or not he had won, he asked the clerk for help. “The guy just looked at it and smiled. He told me what I won,” the man said. “I was stunned!”

All he could think of at that moment, and in the week since his win, was how much he’d now be able to do for his family, the winner said. His family members here in Maryland and around the country don’t know it yet, but they will soon share his Lottery luck.

“Family always came first in my home when I was a kid,” he said. “We were taught that by our grandparents and parents.”

Want to try your luck with the Prince George’s County instant ticket vending machine? Visit his lucky store, New Carrollton Liquors, at 8433 Annapolis Road in Hyattsville. For selling the top-prize-winning ticket, the retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. Emerald Riches is on sale statewide with five remaining $100,000 top prizes.
