Happy Bowie resident will visit overseas relatives
A “Lucky Grandma” from Bowie can pack her bags for a trip to Italy after winning the $20,000 top prize on a Lucky Bingo scratch-off.
The loyal scratch-off player has won prizes before playing the Lottery’s bingo-style instant tickets. “I love the bingos. Sometimes I win $50, $100 or $300,” she said.
Although accustomed to winning, the Prince George’s County resident didn’t trust her eyes when a scan of the $2 instant ticket’s prize check area showed a $20,000 win.
“I can’t believe it,” she recalled. “I started scratching the (bingo) numbers. Twice I checked the ticket on my own. Then I said to the store clerk, ‘Can you please check for me?’ ” The clerk did and came back, motioning her to be quiet. “He said, ‘Shhhh. It’s $20,000!’” the delighted winner said.
The 59-year-old left Willow Tree Liquors in Frederick and went to the car where her daughter and a grandchild waited. “I opened the door and I said, ‘I won $20,000!’ ” recalled “Lucky Grandma.” Her daughter’s reaction was shock. “I said, ‘No way, Mama!’” After the daughter viewed the printout of the prize that the clerk had given her mother, the women drove quickly away from the store. “She was super excited,” said “Lucky Grandma’s” daughter.
The winner has an extended family overseas that she can now visit, thanks to her prize. “Lucky Grandma” also plans to share some of the windfall with her family here at home.
Her Lottery retailer can share in the fun, too. Willow Tree Liquors located at 5 Willowdale Drive in Frederick earns a $200 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off in the game. Bingo-style scratch-off fans can try their luck with this $2 instant ticket, which has three more unclaimed $20,000 top prizes and five $10,000 prizes.
