Wins $50,000 Playing the Hot Hand Scratch-off

Noel McDonald was hanging out with her 7-year-old son, after an appointment, when lady luck appeared. Her son wanted a snowball, so she stopped to get him one.  While there, they ran into a nearby liquor store to cash in some of her winning scratch-offs, which led to $50,000 win.

With the $20 she won, Noel bought five more tickets and headed home. That evening, the 40-year-old scratched the tickets. Her eyes grew large when she saw that she won a substantial prize, but she wasn’t quite sure how much. “I looked over it about six times, had my neighbor check it and then called my husband and my mom,” she said. “I just could not believe it.” Thinking she had only won $20,000, the registered nurse came to Lottery Headquarters with her mom and son.

“I was floored when Lottery Officials told me it was a $50,000 win,” she smiled. She said since she considers her son, Mason, her lucky charm, she’ll get him the iPad he’s been saving up for. Noel, who is also expecting twins in early spring, said some of the winnings will go towards a new home. “Well, we are sure going to need the space,” she laughed. The rest of the winnings will go into a college savings fund for her kids.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Beverage Barn, located at 3000 Emmorton Rd. in Abingdon.

Interesting enough, Abingdon is also the home of the Lottery’s first Powerball jackpot winners of the $108.8 million jackpot from September 7th.
