Adelphi Man Mistakes $50,000 Winning Ticket for $400 Prize

Adelphi retiree James Baldwin wins a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 top prize!

A few months ago, James Baldwin checked his Bonus Match 5 ticket and thought he held a $400 winner from the June 20 drawing. Since he had a cruise planned in September, the Adelphi man decided to wait to cash the ticket until closer to his trip.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when the 73-year-old tried to cash his ticket at a Lottery retailer and was shocked to learn it wasn’t worth $400 — it was worth $50,000! The retired engineer, who purchased the lucky ticket at Riverdale BP, quickly signed the back of the ticket, put it away for safekeeping and shared the news with his wife.

“My wife couldn’t believe it,” James told Lottery officials. “She said she was glad playing the Lottery had paid off.”

James had to wait a little longer — after the cruise — to claim his prize. Still surprised by the win, the Prince George’s County man hasn’t decided yet what he will do with his prize.

James isn’t the only one who wins. For selling the top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket in the drawing, Riverdale BP at 5500 Kenilworth Avenue in Riverdale will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery.

Bonus Match 5 drawings take place seven days a week. Players select five numbers ranging from 1 to 39. The Bonus Ball drawn from the remaining 34 numbers provides extra chances to win. Your ticket is a winner if you match five, four or three of the original five winning numbers selected in the drawing. If you match the Bonus Ball number, you only need to match four, three or two of your original numbers to win!
