Lucky ‘Nana’ brings home Bonus Match 5 prize
Bonus Match 5 was already the favorite Maryland Lottery game of a 62-year-old grandmother from Harford County. It’s sure to remain her top choice now that she won $50,000 playing the popular daily game.
“Nana” as she is affectionately called by her grandchildren, wasn’t feeling her best earlier this week when she ventured out to purchase her Bonus Match 5 tickets. She followed her routine of splitting her purchases between two retailers. After getting her games, “Nana” came home and put the tickets on the dining room table. Later that night, the Belcamp resident was in for a huge surprise when she checked her tickets for the April 2 drawing.
“I got out my phone and started checking the numbers,” she said. “The first ticket was not a winner, but oh my goodness, that second ticket was the big win.” The shocked winner kept looking at the $2 quick-pick ticket and checking it repeatedly.
“You know sometimes you could be looking at the wrong date,” she said, shaking her head. “The numbers will be right, but the date is wrong.”
Still needing proof, “Nana” ran upstairs to have her older sister verify her top-prize win. “I said, look at these numbers and tell me I got it right,” recalled the big winner. Together, they checked the numbers one more time and confirmed her Lottery luck. To win $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5, you have to match the first five numbers drawn.
The retired military nurse and her sister claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters the next day. “Nana’s” sister expressed how happy she was for her sibling. “She really deserves it,” said the sister. “She is always thinking of others and trying to help.”
“Nana” said she plans to help family members with some of the prize and save the rest. “I’ll use it wisely,” she said.
Also winning is the retailer that sold the lucky ticket. All in One Convenience Store located at 1327 Policy Drive in Belcamp earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning ticket in the game.
