Falls one number shy of winning $40 million jackpot
An Aberdeen man is celebrating his 59th birthday in style this month after discovering that his gift to himself of Powerball tickets for the Sept. 21 drawing was a real winner of an idea! In fact, his belated birthday purchase gave him a $50,000 prize.
The lucky man was finishing work at a local dealership, where he is a parts driver, when inspiration hit. He decided to pick up a few Powerball tickets as a gift to himself. The Harford County resident stopped at Perryman Grocery located at 1551 Perryman Road in Aberdeen around 5:30 p.m. and bought tickets to that night’s drawing. Time passed and the jackpot drawing came and went.
“I figured I’d check my tickets at the local 7-Eleven near my house,” he said. “On my first few tickets, the ticket scanner said I wasn’t a winner. On the last quick-pick ticket I had, it said that I had won and told me to immediately come to Lottery headquarter to cash in my winning $50,000 Powerball ticket!”
His winning quick-pick numbers were 1, 28, 63, 69 and Power Ball 17. He was just one number shy of winning a $40 million jackpot. No one hit the jackpot that night or on Sept. 24 so the jackpot has rolled to $60 million for the Wednesday, Sept. 28 drawing.
“I always told the man above that I would be happy with whatever I won,” he said. “I certainly am right now.” The lucky winner said he plans to pay bills with his prize and save the rest for home repairs or home projects.
