Wins $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5
While running errands on Oct. 16, an off-duty law enforcement officer found himself near a store that flooded him with memories of his recently passed father. It turns out that the Lottery luck his dad often encountered at Freddie’s Liquors, which was enough to make the Forestville store his favorite Lottery retailer, was waiting for the son, too.
The Capitol Heights resident bought a $2 Bonus Match 5 ticket that gave him a $50,000 top-prize win in the Oct. 16 drawing.
“My dad played the Lottery several times a week,” said the 47-year-old winner. “I don’t play quite as often, but when I buy tickets it gets me thinking about how much fun he had with them. When I saw Freddie’s, I just knew I had to stop in and get a ticket.”
The husband and grandfather checked the game’s results on his Maryland Lottery smartphone app as he left work the next day. The lucky cop reports that his heart suddenly went into high gear.
“My wife told me that my eyes were as wide as she’s ever seen them when I got home,” he said. The happy husband had called her on the way home with his $50,000 news but she was sure that he was joking. The look on his face convinced her that his news was real!
“You know, just last week, I sent a text to my wife telling her that a blessing was on the way,” the winner said. “I just didn’t expect it this soon.”
The couple plans to pay bills with their Bonus Match 5 prize and set aside some of the money for upcoming travel. The Lottery retailer, which has now endeared itself to two generations of the family, is also a winner. Freddie’s Liquors located at 7700 Marlboro Pike in Forestville earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the daily game.
