Pikesville man brings home $50,000
A 53-year-old Pikesville man who is the caretaker for his wife had reason to celebrate this week after he won $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5. He bought his lucky ticket while taking his wife to one of her dialysis appointments.
The caring husband retired from his job as a truck driver two years ago to take care of his ill wife. The location of her dialysis treatments is near the Royal Farms store located at 10988 Red Run Boulevard in Owings Mills.
“Whenever she has an appointment, I’ll run across the street and grab some Lottery tickets,” he said.
On Feb. 22, he bought his tickets, including a Bonus Match 5 ticket, and locked them in his car. He didn’t think to check them until two days later, when his wife had another appointment and he ran to the Royal Farms again to purchase more tickets. He got the good news when he scanned his ticket at the store’s ticket checker.
“When the slip said to cash at Lottery, I knew it was big,” said the winner. “I then asked for a printout of the numbers to check again.”
After sharing the news with his shocked wife, they headed home where the winner wanted to check one more time on mdlottery.com. There he found a press release about a winning Bonus Match 5 ticket that was sold in that very Royal Farms store and printed it out.
“I said to my wife, ‘look at this, they are looking for me,’” he smiled.
The father of two said it is a blessing to be this fortunate and he plans to use the money to pay bills. The retailer is a winner as well. For selling the top-prize-winning ticket, the Royal Farms store will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
