‘A Different Winner’ finds luck with Cash Craze Crossword game
A Mt. Airy retiree was the complete opposite of cash crazed after winning a $30,000 top prize on the Cash Craze Crossword scratch-off. “A Different Winner,” as he dubbed himself, was so calm he waited four days after discovering his lucky scratch-off to share news of his win with one of his three adult children.
The 85-year-old grandfather of five and great-grandfather of three is a loyal Maryland Lottery player accustomed to small wins. He frequently buys batches of scratch-offs from his favorite Lottery retailer, Twin Arch Spirits in Mt. Airy. The human resources retiree said he buys scratch-offs by the bunch because he selects $1 and $2 tickets to send south to a Florida relative who thinks Maryland’s scratch-offs are luckier than those in the Sunshine State.
On the day he found his lucky scratch-off, “A Different Winner” made his Lottery purchases and headed home. “I do not scratch in public,” he said with a smile.
When he finished scratching off the winning $3 Cash Craze Crossword instant ticket, he started counting up the words on his game. “I kept rechecking it about four times,” he said. Each time, he found one more word until he reached 10 words and became a $30,000 top-prize winner. The Carroll County resident said his previous record was a $3,000 prize.
These winnings will go to help his family, “A Different Winner” said. “I will share it with my three adult kids,” he explained.
His favorite Lottery retailer, which is located at 1001 Twin Arch Road, will receive a $300 bonus from the Lottery for selling the lucky ticket. Cash Craze Crossword went on sale June 7 and has six unclaimed $30,000 top prizes and seven $10,000 prizes remaining.
