Takes home the third-tier prize in Aug. 19 drawing
A Laurel grandmother of two walked away from a casino with no clue that a $4 quick-pick Powerball ticket she bought there would deliver a $50,000 prize in the Aug. 19 drawing.
The Howard County resident found her lucky ticket while at the Maryland Live Casino located at 7002 Arundel Mills Road in Hanover. The 58-year-old didn’t realized she’d won until days later, when she checked her Powerball tickets while eating lunch at a local fast food restaurant.
“When my husband and I saw that we had won, we were just so happy,” she said. “We simply could not believe our luck. As a matter of fact, I think we’re still in shock, but in a good way.”
In addition to paying a few bills, the lucky winner plans to save a chunk of the prize. She would also like to celebrate her big win by doing something fun with her family. “Winning big like this doesn’t come along that often,” she said, “so I’d like to celebrate it by being with the people I love.”
Because no one hit the jackpot in the Aug. 19 drawing, it has rolled to whopping $700 million dollars for tonight’s drawing (Aug. 23). This is the second largest jackpot in world history and pays out $6.9 million per year for 29 years. The cash option is $443.3 million before taxes.
