Casual Player Wins Serious Money with Power 8s Scratch-Off

Bowie carpet installer claims $100,000 top prize

An occasional Maryland Lottery scratch-off player from Bowie who installs carpet for a living enjoyed finding a plush $100,000 prize on a Power 8s scratch-off.

The 26-year-old was on his way home from an installation project when he stopped at the Glenn Dale Mini-Mart to buy a few instant tickets. The Prince George’s County resident doesn’t always play Lottery games but, when he does, he prefers scratch-offs.

The casual player checked his instant tickets for a winner right away. On one game, his scratching revealed the number 8 with the word PRIZE and the amount $100,000 next to it! Our winner confirmed his Lottery luck using the store ticket checker and went home to put the scratch-off in a safe place.

Unlike many people who win big, the player did not check the scratch-off again while waiting until he and two co-workers could claim the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. That day came April 30. The winner had no plans yet for a celebration or for spending his prize. He does plan to seek sound advice for handling his windfall, he said.

In addition, the lucky player will continue working and playing Lottery games for the enjoyment he gets scratching instant tickets. “It’s the little high you get playing,” he said.

Also lucky is the Glenn Dale Mini-Mart. The Prince George’s County store located at 11002 Lanham Severn Road in Glenn Dale earns a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-tier winning scratch-off in the $10 game.

In Power 8s, six top prizes remain unclaimed along with 15 $10,000 prizes and thousands of other prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000. Released Dec. 26, the popular game stayed in the top 10 games sold through April on the Maryland Lottery’s Top 40 scratch-offs chart.
