Nottingham woman finds game’s first top prize
Buying the Maryland Lottery’s The Price is Right® scratch-off led a Nottingham mother of four to “Come On Down” to headquarters to claim the first of eight $50,000 top prizes in the new $5 game.
The hospital healthcare worker and her husband were together at The Liquor Pump in Parkville when she selected the game, which went on sale April 25. The 37-year-old bought two instant tickets and scratched both of them in the store. The first game was, sadly, a non-winner, she said. The store owner saw her scratch off the winning instant ticket and his “Congratulations!” led nearby customers to give her a thumbs up and big smiles.
“The other customers saw my excitement but they didn’t know how much I won,” she said. “I was like, ‘Be quiet!’ ” said her husband, who is a landscaping employee.
The Baltimore County couple went home and told only a few select people about the family’s good fortune. “We kept looking at the ticket and looking at it,” said the happy mom. They hid it overnight in a drawer in one of the bedrooms and claimed the prize the next day at Lottery headquarters.
They plan to pay bills with their windfall and make home improvements. They’ll also keep playing their favorite Lottery games, which include Cash4Life, Powerball, Mega Millions and scratch-offs.
For selling the top-prize scratch-off in the game, The Liquor Pump at 8535 Old Harford Road in Parkville will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery. In addition to seven more top prizes, The Price is Right has more than 1.1 million prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
