Retired sales exec wins Powerball’s 2nd-tier prize
A Prince George’s County man whose Maryland Lottery ticket was only one number shy of giving him a Powerball jackpot win said coming in second suits him just fine. After all, he doubled his second-tier $1 million prize by adding Power Play to his ticket for only $1.
“My husband always says that he doesn’t need to win the jackpot, that he’d be happy with the second prize,” his wife said as the happy couple sat in the Winner’s Lounge at Lottery headquarters. A former sales executive for several national companies, our winner is a frequent Lottery player and has found success with Lottery games over the years. His experience made the discovery of his Powerball prize even more exciting.
“When I checked my numbers last night I was shocked, I didn’t believe it,” the 72-year-old said. “I must have gone back five or six times to be sure.” He shared the news with his wife when she returned home from running errands. “I told her to sit down, but not to worry, it was good news.” Not much sleep took place in their Laurel home that evening due to excitement over the $2 million prize!
The couple’s happy Lottery saga began at Laurel Lakes Liquors at 14132 Baltimore Avenue in Laurel and will soon take them far from Maryland. “We had a trip to the beach planned already. Now we’ll be upgrading everything,” the lucky player said, joking. More travel is definitely in their future in the form of a cruise, possibly, or a trip to Europe. Their last words before heading out with their new fortune: “This is such a blessing.”
For selling the second-tier winning Powerball ticket with Power Play, Laurel Lakes Liquors will receive a $2,500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. This is the first second-tier win with Power Play in the state this year. Maryland has had nine $1 million second-tier wins in 2014 compared to 14 second-tier wins in 2013.
