Laurel resident strikes gold with game’s doubler promotion
If you played the same Bonus Match 5 numbers at the same Maryland Lottery retailer every day would it make you a big winner? A Laurel resident can answer with an emphatic “yes!” The loyal player took home $100,000 with taxes paid under a special promotion.
The 59-year-old truck driver has played the same set of numbers daily for about five months, buying his tickets at the 2 Go Convenience & Deli in Savage. Late last year, he won $800 and kept chasing the game’s regular top-prize win of $50,000.
“I figure if you’ve got a ticket, you’ve got a chance,” he said. The lucky ticket he purchased on April 18 for that night’s drawing carried the coveted “Doubler” message on the top of the ticket. That promotion, which ends April 26, doubles any win on the ticket and pays taxes on top-prize wins of $50,000 and $100,000.
The loyal player was at home doing chores during the Bonus Match 5 drawing. Later, he checked the winning numbers on his computer and saw his ticket matched.
“I dropped to my knees and broke down crying,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it. I was crying like a baby. I called my wife at work and she said, ‘Take a deep breath!’ ”
The Howard County resident said the reality of his win was just starting to sink in when he came to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim his prize. Other than paying bills, the happy winner said he doesn’t have any other plans for his prize yet. He does intend to keep playing his lucky numbers!
His lucky store also shares his good fortune. For selling the top-prize winning ticket, 2 Go Convenience & Deli will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
