Deluxe Crossword Game Delivers Top-Prize Win to Halethorpe Woman

Scratch-off fan claims $50,000 prize playing favorite game

Thanks to Lottery luck, a Halethorpe woman who withdrew cash from an ATM to buy her favorite $5 scratch-off walked away with even more riches. The 59-year-old elementary school employee used her cash to purchase two Deluxe Crossword scratch-offs and won $50,000!

The lucky player was off work on Monday after inclement weather led Baltimore County schools to close for the day. She decided to get cash and play some scratch-offs. The ATM was broken at the first location she stopped by so she headed to Woodman Liquors in Baltimore. The scratch-off fan took out $40 and bought one of the $5 Deluxe Crossword scratch-offs.

“I love the crossword games,” she said. “You can take your time and play.”

That first instant ticket, sadly, was not a winner, so she bought one more of the $5 games to try her luck. Instead of taking her time to scratch off the game as she normally does, the loyal player scanned the ticket. A message that she had never seen before appeared on the screen. It read, “See Lottery Agent.” After confirming her $50,000 top-prize win, the lucky retailer informed her that she needed to come to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim her prize.

Excited and out of breath, the happy winner quickly began walking home and called her oldest daughter to share the good news.

“She told me she finally won big,” said the daughter, who drove her mom to Baltimore to claim the prize. “But, she didn’t tell me how much until later.”

Once in the Winner’s Circle at Lottery headquarters, the mother and daughter shared the story of their crazy day. The Baltimore County winner said the first item on her list of things to purchase with her prize is a car. The winner shared that she and her husband have had a tough year and this win will help them get back on their feet.

Also a winner is Woodman Liquors located at 4017 Annapolis Road in Baltimore County. For selling a top-prize winning scratch-off in the game, the retailer will earn a $500 bonus from the Lottery.

Our winner left plenty of prizes in the new Deluxe Crossword game, which went on sale in December. Players can look for eight more $50,000 top prizes, 19 $10,000 prizes and thousands of others ranging from $5 to $1,000.
