Glen Burnie woman wins $50,000 playing Gold Rush X50 game
Twelve years have passed since Helen Howard and her husband purchased property on the Eastern Shore in hopes of one day building the home of their dreams. The Glen Burnie scratch-off player told Lottery officials about the 12 years they’ve spent getting permits, hiring surveyors, digging a well and scrambling to find the money to pay for it all. With just one more expensive roadblock left in their path, the lucky couple struck gold with a $50,000 win on the Gold Rush X50 game.
“We were driving out there to meet one more inspector when I told my husband that I needed a quick pit stop,” said Helen. “When I took my purse, he was annoyed, thinking that I’d probably be getting a Lottery ticket when we still had permits and a survey to pay for.” In fact, the 49-year-old scratch-off fan did buy a $10 Gold Rush X50 scratch-off at the Eden Valero gas station just south of Salisbury. “I stuck it in my purse for later.”
“Later” turned out to be last Sunday. “I saw the $1,000 match right away and was super excited. Then, I noticed the gold bar symbol next to it.” That gold bar automatically multiplied the corresponding prize 50 times.
“I stared at it for a moment and then called over my husband,” Helen said. “He didn’t believe it at first, of course, but then we started celebrating.” Amid the revelry, Helen took care of one piece of business. “I told him that he could never again complain when I buy a Lottery ticket!”
The Gold Rush X50 game went on sale in May and quickly climbed to the top of the Lottery sales charts. The scratch-off is part of the Lottery’s Gold Rush Family of Games featuring multipliers ranging from five to 100 and top prizes of up to $1 million. Six $100,000 top prizes remain in the Gold Rush X50 game, along with 10 $50,000 prizes and 21 $10,000 prizes.
Helen’s lucky retailer, the Valero gas station and convenience store, is located at 3602 Stockyard Road in the Worcester County town of Eden.
