Dressed Liked a Million Bucks… or at Least $100,000!

Gaithersburg man claims $100,000 prize on the $20,000,000 Cash Payout scratch-off

An 89-year-old Gaithersburg man who won $100,000 playing the $20,000,000 Cash Payout game was dressed for the occasion when he arrived at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the big prize. Decked out in a three-piece suit, he shared that this was his second big Lottery win.

“I’ve been here before after winning $100,000 on another scratch-off over 10 years ago,” he said. “But I’m just as excited for this win.”

The retired deli shop owner stopped at his regular Lottery retailer, Steve’s Beer, Wine and Deli, in Gaithersburg, to play a few scratch-off games on April 14. He purchased two $10 games and played them in the store. The second ticket was the $20,000,000 Cash Payout game that delivered the big win.

“I believed I would win and I did,” said the dapper grandfather of three. “I handed the ticket to the cashier and said, ‘I’m a winner, put it in the machine.’” The cashier did just that, confirming the $100,000 top prize with a congratulatory printout.

The generous winner then went to the ATM, took out $200 and gave the retailer $100 and a fellow Lottery player and friend the other $100. He then went home and called his daughter to invite her to come over so he could share the good news.

“He told me to open the drawer and I couldn’t believe when I saw that winning ticket,” said the winner’s daughter, who accompanied him to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize. “He deserves it because he helps others all the time.”

The widower, who also has a son who lives out-of-state, declined to share what he will do with his newfound wealth. When a Lottery official asked his plans, he simply said with a smile, “That’s my business.”

The owner of Steve’s Beer, Wine and Deli is probably smiling too. The retailer, located at 12132 Darnestown Road, will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $100,000-winning ticket. The $20,000,000 Cash Payout ticket launched in January, and there are still three unclaimed  $100,000 top prizes, nine $20,000 prizes, 17 $10,000 prizes and thousands of additional prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000.
