Education Retirees Surprised with Mega Millions Win

Claimed Maryland’s only second-tier $250,000 prize

School is still out forever for two education field retirees but now they can afford to kick back and enjoy their everlasting summer in style. The Owings Mills couple won $250,000 playing Mega Millions on Friday.

Although they have a Mega Millions subscription, the husband bought four additional Mega Millions tickets the day of the drawing. He put them away and didn’t even think about checking the tickets until Monday. “I didn’t know I won,” he said.

“I don’t usually check the tickets right away, I keep them for a week or so.”

On Monday morning, the grandfather of one had dropped off his vehicle at a car dealership to get some work done. He decided to walk to a nearby store to buy his midday Pick 3 / Pick 4 numbers and then remembered the Mega Millions tickets.

When they ran through the machine, he happily discovered one was a winner. Yet, he couldn’t tell how much the ticket was worth. The machine directed him to go to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to cash the ticket.

As soon as he arrived home, the father of one went online to check the numbers and saw he held a $250,000 winner! After celebrating, the couple decided not to risk keeping the ticket even one more day and came to headquarters.

No one hit the Mega Millions jackpot Friday night. Only five players in Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia and Washington hit five numbers and won $250,000 each. Be sure to get your tickets in time for the next drawing at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The jackpot rolled from $145 million to an estimated $160 million with a cash option of $109 million.

The fact that they won is still sinking in and our lucky couple is unsure what they’ll do with their winnings. They do know they will keep the win a secret! They found their Lottery luck at Painters Mill Wine and Spirits at 9932 Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills.
