Eldersburg Man Wins Big on Scratch-off Rejected by Friend

With a $30,000 top-prize win a day after Thanksgiving, “Skee-Ball Greg” of Eldersburg is looking forward to happy holidays.

Carroll County convenience store worker snags $30,000 top prize SKEE-BALL ticket

“It’s really a funny story,” said “Skee-Ball Greg,” laughing and holding a copy of his $30,000 winning Maryland Lottery SKEE-BALL® scratch-off. “I wouldn’t consider myself a Lottery player so this really shouldn’t have happened to me at all.”

During a break at his job, the 23-year-old convenience store clerk walked with a co-worker to a different store a couple of blocks away. His colleague likes to play scratch-offs at that store, which is 7-Eleven #18127 in Eldersburg. Our Carroll County winner had found $7 in his pocket earlier in the day and wanted to spend the money on something fun.

After his co-worker purchased a couple of scratch-offs, “Skee-Ball Greg” of Eldersburg suggested his friend try the $3 SKEE-BALL instant ticket.

“He told me he didn’t like SKEE-BALL because he never hit on it,” “Skee-Ball Greg” recalled. “Then, he said, ‘You should play it if you think it is a winner.’ I took his advice and now I’m a winner!”

The infrequent Lottery player won one of the four remaining SKEE-BALL top prizes. After checking the instant ticket twice in the store and once back at his work site, “Skee-Ball Greg” signed the back of the scratch-off. He claimed his prize the next business day at Maryland Lottery headquarters. Now that he’s $30,000 richer, “Skee-Ball Greg” plans to buy a new car and gaming computer and give his mother a very special Christmas present.

“I can’t wait to see the look on her face this Christmas,” “Skee-Ball Greg” said with a smile.

The lucky Carroll County retailer also has a reason to celebrate the big win. For selling a $30,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, the store located at 2033 Liberty Road receives a $300 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Try your luck with the SKEE-BALL scratch-off, which still has many unclaimed prizes. Players can search for the three remaining $30,000 top prizes, eight $1,000 prizes or one of the thousands of other prizes ranging from $3 to $100.
