Wins $50,000 Top Prize on Baseball-themed Ticket
Hungry for dinner, the 50-year-old scratch-off fan stopped at the Royal Farm to pick up some food. But, an appetite for Maryland Lottery scratch-offs soon put her meal plans on the back burner. The mother-of-two purchased one $10 scratch-off and two $5 Double Play instant tickets. “I picked the Double Play ticket because I like the pull tabs on the back,” said the player, who was accompanied to Lottery headquarters by her husband.
She scratched all of them while in the store and suspected that she was a winner. “I asked the cashier to look at the ticket,” she said. “I told him, ‘I don’t think you can cash this.’” After examining the ticket, the clerk told her that she had to go to the Lottery Claim Center.
Upon returning home, still wondering if her eyes were playing tricks on her, the winner showed her Double Play ticket to her husband. “We looked at it together,” she said. “It took a while to sink in.” Though she and her spouse appeared unfazed by their good fortune, they expressed gratitude for their windfall. “I was unemployed for two years,” said the woman, who now works as a dispatcher. “This will be a big help.”
This is the second player to hit it big with the baseball-themed scratch-off, which also features a second-chance contest that partners the Lottery with the Orioles. The contest offers experiential prizes like a trip to see the O’s play at Fenway Park, plus players can also be chosen as the “contestant of the game” and win $1,000 for each double play turned by the Orioles. The winner intends to use her winnings to pay bills and possibly do some home improvements. The winning Double Play ticket was purchased at Royal Farm #054, located at 8268 Lark Brown Drive in Elkridge.
