Ellicott City Woman Claims $100,000 Powerball Prize

Six other tickets worth $50,000 remain unclaimed across Maryland

Adding the Power Play multiplier to a Powerball ticket turned a $50,000 prize into a solid $100,000 payday for a Maryland Lottery player from Ellicott City.

The Howard County woman selected a set of four combinations for the March 7 and 11 drawings, and added the $1 Power Play option to her $24 ticket. She found her hot ticket at Wegmans #47 located at 8855 McGaw Road in Columbia. On her winning combination of 2, 7, 15, 21, 33 and Powerball 23, she matched every number drawn on March 7 except one, which is a third-tier win and typically pays $50,000. The multiplier for that drawing was x2.

How lucky was her big win? The odds of a third-tier win in Powerball are 1 in 913,129. While there were no jackpot winners in the March 7 drawing, there were 18 third-tier winners nationwide, with the Ellicott City player being the only one from Maryland.

No one has hit the Powerball jackpot since a lucky player won $70 million on Feb. 12 with a ticket sold in Michigan. The jackpot is set for $130 million for the Wednesday, March 18 drawing. The cash option is $101 million.

Players in Maryland have 182 days from the drawing date to claim their winnings. Fifteen $50,000 winning tickets were sold in Maryland in 2020. At present, eight $50,000 winning Powerball tickets remain unclaimed from 2019 and 2020. The unclaimed tickets were sold for the following drawings:
