Jackpot chaser takes home big win from Nov. 19 drawing
A jackpot chaser from Essex raced off to play Powerball when the jackpot soared to $320 million for the Nov. 19 drawing. He purchased a quick-pick ticket the day before the drawing from Telegraph Liquors in Severn and slipped it into his wallet, unaware that Lottery luck planned to deliver a $50,000 prize within 24 hours.
Not until Thanksgiving Day, nearly a week later, did he think to check his numbers to see if he won.
After filling his belly with a Thanksgiving feast, the restaurant dishwasher went to a Lottery retailer near his home to check his $10 ticket. The father of four tried to remain calm when the message showed that he needed to come to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim the prize. And, after double-checking his numbers, the 37-year-old knew he won $50,000 by matching four of the white balls and the red Power Ball.
“I kept looking at the ticket, to make sure I wasn’t fooling myself,” said the winner. “I must have checked it a thousand times.”
The happy dad told Lottery officials that he intends to pay credit card bills with the winnings and take his children to Disney World.
Want to visit his lucky retailer? Telegraph Liquors, located at 7741 Telegraph Road in Severn, also sold a $50,000 top-prize Bonus Match 5 ticket in April 2015 and a $1 million Powerball ticket in April 2014.
