Family Birthdays Help Laurel Man Win Bonus Match 5 Prize

$50,000 win for loyal player

It was the morning paper that supplied him news of his lottery luck, but it was news that a Laurel man did not pass along to his wife – until today. He had to spill the beans when he asked her to accompany him to the Lottery’s claim center to claim his $50,000 Bonus Match 5 prize.

The retired Coca-Cola employee is an avid Lottery player and a fan of Bonus Match 5 in particular, sticking with the same combination of family birthdays for his numbers for years. Those numbers greeted him this past weekend when he opened the paper, but he kept quiet until he could be sure. “There are mistakes in newspapers sometimes,” he told Lottery officials. “I wanted to make sure it was real before I let myself believe.” A quick visit to the store that sold him the winner, Laurel Mart at 820 Second Street in Laurel, and another to the Lottery’s website for final confirmation removed all questions.

Even with the doubt removed, the 74-year-old father of three and grandfather of three sat on the news for almost two days. He did, however, give his wife a bit of a hint. She told us, “He made me a bit suspicious when he told me that I should go ahead and get a Christmas gift for a friend over which I’d been wavering because of the price tag.”

The couple plans to put most of their winnings in the bank, using some to make the holiday season a bit nicer for their family. Their Bonus Match 5 win on Saturday was the first of two this past weekend. Sunday night’s Bonus Match 5 drawing produced a winner in Columbia.
