$40,000 win will fund family trip
A Germantown gent who stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters to claim a $40,000 Keno prize confessed that he missed his lucky game. The 68-year-old didn’t see more and more of his Keno numbers pop up or experience the thrill of watching the dollars pile up because he was focused on a nearby Racetrax screen.
The medical professional was playing his two favorite Lottery games simultaneously while spending time after work with friends. His winning Keno game had just started when the Racetrax horses he’d picked turned into the home stretch, drawing his attention.
“I looked up and saw that there was a 6x bonus for the Keno game, which was exciting because I’d played the bonus,” said the married father of seven adult children. “And then, I started noticing numbers I recognized.”
Selecting the same numbers every time he plays Keno had cemented them into his memory. “I knew that I had won, but not how much,” said the loyal player. “So, I stayed cool.” Later, after consulting the Lottery’s website, the Montgomery County man saw that he’d be taking home $40,000.
“Even then I was pretty calm,” he said. “My wife was going crazy! It made for a pretty happy evening in my home.”
The couple will use the winnings to pay off some bills and travel, possibly to his native Jamaica. When the happy winner returns from vacation, look for him at Shady Grove Beer, Wine & Deli at 15904 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg. “My friends will never believe that I won big, I can’t wait to tell them,” he said.
The retailer is also happy about his win. For selling a winning Keno ticket over $10,000, the retailer will receive a $400 bonus from the Lottery.
