Still smiling about Super Slots scratch-off prize
A thoughtful daughter devised the perfect plan to distract her mom as they drove from her home in Upper Marlboro to the hospital for a scheduled surgery. The daughter stopped along the way at Waldorf Liquors and bought her 65-year-old mother some Maryland Lottery scratch-offs to play.
“I knew buying a few scratch-offs would help take the surgery off my mother’s mind until we got there,” said the 34-year-old daughter. “As I started to drive off, I noticed mom was scratching her tickets we had just bought. The next thing I heard was mom yelling, ‘I won, I won!’ ”
The Prince George’s County resident held a top-tier $77,700 prize-winning Super Slots scratch-off. The pair told Lottery officials they had to pull the car over because they were in such a state of shock.
“Stopping and buying those tickets was the best thing we’ve ever done and it definitely took my mind off the surgery,” said the lucky winner. “Even when we got to the hospital, the doctors could not figure out why I was smiling from ear to ear.”
Although she is still recuperating from surgery, the lucky woman reports that she cannot stop smiling. She worked at a major supermarket chain for over 30 years before her retirement and plans to save most of her prize. She will start planning a family vacation to Jamaica, though! “Winning this money is the best medicine yet,” said the happy mother of five.
For selling the top-prize winning scratch-off, Waldorf Liquors at 2276 Crain Highway in Waldorf will receive a $770 bonus from the Lottery. Remaining prizes on the $5 ticket range from $5 to $1,000.
