Claims top prize on Double Your Dollars scratch-off
This past January, a couple of Aberdeen co-workers decided to contribute $20 each to purchase Maryland Lottery scratch-offs. Soon after, a third friend asked if he could join the scratch-off playing group, and the rest is history. The trio just claimed the $50,000 top prize on the Double Your Dollars game.
Forgetfulness played a key role in the big win, according to the lucky trio.
“Last Friday, we had our winnings up to $71 when we all decided to add a little extra and buy $101 worth of tickets,” said one of the excited players. “I told them I would stop on my way home from work that day, but I forgot.”
He didn’t know it at the time, but forgetting to stop on his way home may have been the best mistake of his life. On Sunday, he went to his regular Lottery store to get the instant tickets. Once inside, another patron told him that he should buy the scratch-offs somewhere else because he had just won a few hundred dollars. He decided to take the fellow’s advice and headed to Rock Spring BP in Bel Air.
Once at the BP station, the lucky winner purchased the instant tickets and left with the lucky $5 scratch-off in the group. He was all set to see his scratch-off team members the next day. Once together, they did what they always do – split up the tickets and start scratching. One lucky team member scratched the $50,000 winner and yelled to the others to come take a look.
“I said, ‘I’m going to be sick,’ when I saw how much we won,” said one of the men. “We just couldn’t believe it.”
When asked by Lottery officials what they planned to do with their prize, the consensus was to pay bills. One player joked that their wives would figure out how to spend their windfall. Before leaving Lottery headquarters, the confident players agreed, smiling, that they will return soon to claim another big prize.
Rock Spring BP is also a winner. The Harford County retailer located at 1500 Rock Spring Road in Bel Air will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top-prize winning ticket. The game still has plenty of winning tickets remaining, with four more $50,000 top-prize winners to more than 150,000 $5 winners.
