Former Lawn Service Owner Sees Green with Monopoly Scratch-off Win

Washington, D.C. retiree claims instant ticket’s $100,000 top prize

190-MONOPOLY-ITVM_$10A former lawn service owner who devoted his days to tending customers’ turf is still seeing lots of green. But, instead of growing and mowing grass, the retiree is now growing his bank account with Maryland Lottery Monopoly scratch-off wins.

A frequent player – and winner – of the Lottery’s daily games, the Washington, D.C. resident just won $100,000 playing the new $10 Monopoly scratch-off that went on sale statewide. The Lottery on Jan. 23 launched a family of Monopoly tickets at the $1, $2, $5 and $10 price points.

In the past, our lucky winner said he rarely played scratch-offs and primarily chose Pick 3 and Pick 4 as his games of choice. “I was talking to a friend who also plays the Lottery and he recommended that I try the new Monopoly game,” said the 68-year-old. “I’ve always been lucky with Lottery games, so I figured I’d give them a try.”

What a winning decision! He won with Monopoly instant tickets almost from the beginning, he said. The father of three and grandfather of 13 made a point to get a ticket or two whenever he made a Lottery purchase. He discovered his latest lucky ticket at the 5 & Twelve Food Mart at 7001 Annapolis Road in Hyattsville.

“I was scratching my tickets at home last week when I saw that I had matched a number,” he said. “I was happy, but not really surprised. Then I looked at the prize beneath it!”

While a new truck is a possibility, our winner told us that the first destination for his winnings is the bank. He also plans to stick to his regular Lottery routine. “I’ll play a scratch ticket – always Monopoly – once in a while, whenever it feels right.”

The $10 Monopoly instant game has five more $100,000 top-prize tickets in stores along with 16 tickets with $10,000 prizes. For selling the top-prize ticket, the retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
