Frederick County Man Mines Gold Scratch-off for $50,000 Top Prize

“Gold Miner” extracted a $50,000 top-prize nugget from the Gold scratch-off.

A Frederick County husband and wife scratch-off duo who buy instant tickets for each other are still celebrating their big win for the home team. The pair mined a $50,000 top-prize nugget out of the Maryland Lottery’s Gold game!

Lottery luck came their way when the wife stopped at Sheetz #519 in Frederick to buy several scratch-offs for her husband. She prefers bingo-style scratch-offs while her husband is happy playing any type of instant ticket. She bought two of the $5 Gold games and headed home.

Her husband, who works as a plumber, was there when she arrived and immediately began scratching off the games. His low-key reaction to his top-prize win was met with vastly different responses from his wife and sons.

“I only said, ‘Hey, $50,000!’” recalled the 37-year-old winner, who dubbed himself “Gold Miner.” “She started screaming!”

One of his sons suspected that his parents were playing a joke on him. “I looked at the back of the game to see if they were trying to prank me,” said the son, smiling.

The happy Frederick-area residents plan to spend their prize buying a new family vehicle and boosting their savings. A family vacation may be in the works, too, according to “Gold Miner.”

Also a winner is the lucky Frederick County Lottery retailer. Sheetz #519 located at 6050 Buckeystown Pike in Frederick earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize scratch-off in the game.

“Gold Miner” left plenty of big prizes remaining in the Gold game. Players can search for the game’s two unclaimed $50,000 top prizes and hundreds of thousands of other prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
