Frederick Electrician Shocked by $50,000 Scratch-off Win

A shocking $50,000 win greeted electrician Brian James of Frederick.

Claims tax-free prize on $5 game

This year, loyal Maryland Lottery scratch-off player Brian James of Frederick picked up his already steady pace of buying instant ticket games. Although not sure why he did so, the electrician enjoyed a hoped for – yet shocking – result. He won $50,000 with taxes paid!

The happy player made a winning connection with the $5 All Cash No Taxes game.

“I’ve played this ticket a lot in the last few months and had pretty good luck,” he said. “That’s why I chose it at the store.”

Brian was shopping at Wegmans in Frederick when he noticed his scratch-off favorite in the store’s vending machine. Scratching off his All Cash No Taxes instant ticket later at home, he was surprised to see a $5,000 win.

“It was the most I had ever won,” he said, “more than I ever expected to win on a Lottery ticket.” However, the winning was just getting started. “Then, I saw another $5,000 match and then another. It was crazy.”

All told, Brian’s instant ticket contained 10 matches adding up to the game’s $50,000 top prize. He and his wife have enjoyed several fun days sharing their great news with family and friends and talking about how the $50,000 will fit into their lives.

“All the while, though, there was a tiny part of me that didn’t believe, that worried that something about the ticket wasn’t quite right,” he said. At some point in the claiming process at Lottery headquarters, his anxiety changed to excitement, he told Lottery officials.

The Frederick County couple will bank their savings with an eye toward using it for future vacations. The popular All Cash No Taxes game debuted in December and now has four tax-free $50,000 top-prize tickets remaining. There are thousands of other prizes, too, ranging from $5 to $5,000.

His lucky retailer also shares in the fun. For selling the top-prize scratch-off in the game, Wegmans located at 7830 Wormans Mill Road will receive a $500 bonus.
