Lucky Double Dollar Fortune scratch-off leads to $10,000 win

Good fortune is following Sharon Cunningham of Frederick all around town as she rides a two-month winning streak playing Maryland Lottery scratch-offs.

In fact, the Frederick County woman just wound up at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim a $10,000 win on a Double Dollar Fortune scratch-off.

“I won $500 a few weeks ago,” she said. “I’m not done.”

While noting that “not all of them win,” many of the tickets Sharon selects at her four lucky retailers do put enough cash back in her hand to pay for purchases of more Lottery scratch-offs. The winning streak began immediately for the scratch-off novice. “I pick whatever ticket looks happy,” she said.

The store that sold her latest lucky ticket, Festival Major Liquors at 446 Prospect Boulevard in Frederick, is a favorite Lottery retailer because of the customer service, she said. “The people in there are so polite and so nice every single time.”

The 50-something grandmother stopped in and bought a ticket to enjoy playing during a daytrip that had her in the passenger seat and her daughter-in-law behind the wheel. Sharon began scratching the $20 ticket and happily declared it a winner. “I thought I’d won $50,” she said, and her disbelief and excitement grew as she kept scratching off the ticket. The amount of the win climbed to $1,000, then $3,000 and finally – she mistakenly thought – to $9,300. She was delighted at Lottery headquarters to discover the win was actually $10,000!

Sharon works for Community Living Inc. as a house manager for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. She has already shared the good news with family, friends and co-workers.

“The money couldn’t have come at a better time,” she said. Her prize will go toward upcoming medical bills to take care of several health issues and then she plans to share the windfall with family and friends.
