Gaithersburg Siblings Claim First Lottery Win in Big Way

Lucky ticket in Feb. 2 drawing delivers $50,000 prize

Two Gaithersburg sisters who play Powerball and Mega Millions nearly every drawing just enjoyed a whopper of a first Lottery win. They were the only Marylanders to win the $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize in the Feb. 2 drawing!

The lucky sisters play a preselected set of numbers, mostly comprised of birth dates. They matched four out of five numbers in the drawing, along with the Power Ball, on a $4 ticket.

“When I looked at my ticket and saw that I’d won, I was in shock,” said one of the sisters, who is a federal employee. Although her job wasn’t impacted by the partial government shutdown, the winner said she and her sibling greatly appreciate their prize.

The Montgomery County pair bought the winning ticket from Main Street Beer and Wine located at 300 Main Street in Gaithersburg. They’ve kept news of their Lottery luck under wraps except for telling a close friend and a family member. When asked what their plans are for their new fortune, the 53-year-old and 50-year-old women said their prize will go to pay off bills.

No one has hit the Powerball jackpot in recent drawings. There’s still time to buy a ticket for the Saturday, Feb. 9 drawing and try to win the $224 million jackpot prize. The cash option is $136.4 million.
