Carroll County woman wins $50,000 top prize on Home Run Riches scratch-off game
A Carroll County woman’s decision to play a few Maryland Lottery scratch-offs at the end of a trip to the grocery store last week paid off to the tune of a $50,000 top prize on the Home Run Riches game.
The 57-year-old school bus driver was finished shopping at Giant #335 located at 1700 Kingfisher Drive in Frederick when she purchased four $5 games, including one Home Run Riches ticket, and played them on her way home.
“I saw I already matched one number,” said the winner. “But, then I saw more matching numbers and the amounts underneath….I had to pull over to get myself together.”
The lucky winner said she cried and celebrated on the side of the road before making her way home. She decided to not share the news with her husband, children and grandchildren until she receives her winnings. She did, however, tell her co-workers because they were there when she won.
“I took them out to celebrate yesterday,” she said as she visited Maryland Lottery headquarters on April 12 to claim her prize.
The Union Bridge woman said she plans to pay off her car, some bills and help her family, but first she will donate to the Frederick Rescue Mission, where she used to be a volunteer. Choosing the name, “Home Run Charity” because of her giving nature, she shared that she still donates clothes and household items, since she can no longer donate her time.
“I give them what I can, since I can’t be there like I used to,” said “Home Run Charity.”
This was the second $50,000 top prize to be claimed on the Home Run Riches game. There are still five more unclaimed $50,000 prizes, along with thousands of additional prizes ranging from $10 to $5,000. Non-winning Home Run Riches tickets are eligible for the Contestant of the Game second-chance contest, were where players can enter for the chance to win more cash.
The retailer, Giant #335, is getting more cash too. For selling the top-prize-winning ticket, the retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery.
