$20 scratch-off’s top prize leaves player in disbelief – at first
For Glen Burnie’s “Lucky Grandma,” winning a substantial Maryland Lottery prize is not a new experience but it’s still certainly exciting. On a recent excursion to Tobacco Stop 2 in Glen Burnie, she picked up a 2020 Cash instant ticket and scratched it to reveal a $20,200 top prize.
“I said, ‘This can’t be real,’ ” she recalled while claiming her prize on Jan. 23 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “I checked it and I checked it and I checked it.”
Indeed, the big win was real! The 63-year-old was at the store alone and wanted to share her good news. The Anne Arundel County resident returned home and called her sister to share her excitement. Her granddaughter lives with her, so she let her know, too. “I’m so excited!” the grateful grandma told Lottery officials
This win is the largest for the fan of scratch-off games, but not her first big score. She has hit for $500 a couple of times and picked up $1,500 in a Home Run Riches second-chance promotion.
“Lucky Grandma” plans to spend some of her winnings on bills and a family celebration and will save the rest of the prize. The windfall arrives at a good time because some expenses from her husband’s medical treatments weren’t covered by insurance.
Her lucky Lottery retailer also shares in the win. For selling a top-prize scratch-off in the game, the store located at 32 Mountain Road in Anne Arundel County earns a $202 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.
The 2020 Cash scratch-off, a $20 instant ticket, has been in circulation since Nov. 18. Players can search for 172 unclaimed top prizes of $20,200 and 397 $2,020 unclaimed second-place prizes.
