Wins $50,000 top prize on new $5 game
A 56-year-old Glen Burnie man was simply glowing as he entered the Maryland Lottery Winner’s Circle after claiming the first $50,000 top prize on the new Gold scratch-off.
The lucky player had stopped for gas at Crossroad Exxon in Pasadena and went inside to play Pick 3 and Pick 4. While there, he decided to buy a few $5 scratch-offs, too. The Anne Arundel County resident chose the $500 Frenzy game, the All Cash No Taxes instant ticket and the Gold scratch-off. He went out to his truck to play the games, but none of them were winners.
“I don’t know what it was, but I had a feeling, so I went back in and bought three more,” he said, smiling. The married automotive technician purchased the three games again but didn’t play them until later, when he got to work.
“I have a buddy at work and we’ll scratch our games together,” he said. The winner scratched his games first, revealing a $5 win on the Frenzy instant ticket. He then moved on to the Gold scratch-off.
“I matched the number four, but was not wearing my glasses so I didn’t see the size of the prize amount,” said the player. In fact, his friend spotted the big win first. In a kind, but envious way, the friend said to the winner, “You bum, can’t you see all those zeroes!”
The winner put on his glasses and could not believe that all of those zeroes added up to $50,000! “I’m still in shock,” he said, beaming.
After calling his wife to share the great news, the father and grandfather left work early and headed to Lottery headquarters to claim his $50,000 prize. He plans to use the winnings to pay off bills and treat his three grandchildren.
His Lottery retailer, Crossroad Exxon, is a winner too. The Anne Arundel County business located at 8101 Ritchie Highway in Pasadena earned a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top-prize winning scratch-off in the game.
Plenty of top prizes remain on the Gold ticket. There are nine more $50,000 top prizes, 13 $5,000 winners and thousands of other prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000.
