Governor Names New Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director

John A. Martin assumes leadership of Agency on July 1

Governor Larry Hogan has named John A. Martin to serve as Director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency. Martin succeeds Gordon Medenica, who was appointed in 2015 and announced his retirement in April.

Since 2015, Martin has been the Agency’s Managing Director and Chief Revenue Officer, overseeing the Maryland Lottery’s Sales Division and its network of 4,400 retail locations and managing the top-line revenue for traditional lottery products. Previously, he was an assistant director at the Maryland Lottery overseeing sales, creative services, product development and communications. Prior to moving to Maryland in 2009, Martin was Deputy Director of the Office of Sales Management at the Ohio Lottery, overseeing sales operations at 9,000 retailers. He has a communications background and is a graduate of John Carroll University in Ohio.

“Maryland is proud to have one of the best lottery and gaming systems in the country, and with sports betting coming online, we are poised for even more record growth,” Governor Hogan said. “John Martin has done an outstanding job in his role overseeing the agency, and we are fortunate to have him as our new director. I want to sincerely thank Gordon Medenica for his service to Maryland, particularly for the pivotal role he played in establishing our very successful vaccine lottery.”
