‘Grateful Grandfather’ Banks $50,000 Scratch-off Prize

A fan of Maryland Lottery bingo scratch-offs enjoyed a five-figure reward after a Bingo Plus instant ticket delivered a $50,000 top prize.

The U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam has played Lottery games for decades. Jackpot games, Pick 3 and Pick 4 as well as scratch-offs are among those favored by the Bowie man. The $5 Bingo Plus game, which went on sale in 2017, has been his go-to scratch-off game. On the day he bought his lucky scratch-off at the Bowie Exxon, “Grateful Grandfather” simply used the ticket scanner to check for a win. The $50,000 top-prize left him stunned; his last big Lottery win of $21,000 was well over a decade ago.

“I was shocked,” he said. “I had to scan the ticket again.”

With his win confirmed, the 74-year-old quietly left the store with his instant ticket and went home to call his daughter. The father of three and grandfather of five plans to put all of his winnings in the bank.

His favorite Lottery retailer, Bowie Exxon, is also in the money. For selling a $50,000 top-prize scratch-off ticket, the Prince George’s County business located at 1500 N.W. Crain Highway earned a $500 bonus from the Lottery – equal to 1% of the prize value.
